What is Your Contribution vs Your Accountability?

We are often told to be accountable for our actions and our contribution to situations but what does this mean form a spiritual development perspective?

Often it is not until we:

  • risk losing something or someone;
  • have already lost something, someone or the respect of peers;
  • or just realise that our life is not going where we need it;

that we start to think about what our contribution and accountability is in life. Yet accountability and contribution are separate and here’s why.

During our contribution stage we are in a passive or active ACTION stage:

  1. The first stage is our thoughts - they shape our subconscious;
  2. The second is in the feeling - we feel and sense what a thought and possible outcome can be;
  3. The third is in the pre-action stage - the testing or sounding out loud to those within our sphere of influence on what we are thinking to do, how we feel about it and seeking feedback;
  4. The fourth is in the actioning of our intent - now we have rolled the ball and watch as it moves;
  5. The fifth is the assessment - looking at the result of the above, or, looking at the outcome and assessing this.

When we are accountable we are in outcome stage. That’s when we realize that we must now pick up the pieces. So think of the stages that lead us there:

  1. Our thoughts;
  2. Our feelings;
  3. Our actions or inactions;
  4. Our bouncing of the thoughts and feelings within our sphere of influence, which may be a variety of intelligences and emotions depending on the quality and quantity of the people in our lives;
  5. Now most importantly how we personally review the success of this decision.

You see to me the main difference between Accountability and Contribution is when we ACTUALLY think we have succeeded or failed.

When we succeed we feel we have applied all of ourselves well.

When we feel we have failed we turn around and look for a sensation of blame cloaked in the guise of CONTRIBUTION.

We are accountable for every thought, feeling, action, inaction, movement and result we create when we ACTIVELY seek to create them. Within this ACTIVE stage lies our contribution.

So my friends, before you take your thoughts into actions - think about the outcome. Know that you can live with and for this outcome, and that whilst it may not always be aimed at looking after others - it is always designed to be transparent, honest and with the contribution of intention to look after the world by adding a positive into your life without expense to others.
