If you download an MP3 and it won't play or you download an e-book and you can't read it, you may not have the programs on your computer to do this.
These programs below are free to download and can be installed on your system for you to access the MP3s and PDFs.
For MP3 access via a free system that can read all formats: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
For PDF access here is a link to download Adobe Reader for free: http://get.adobe.com/reader/
