As the year closes many of us look back and are amazed at what we coped with. I'm sure some of us faced our challenges well and others struggled.
I was thinking about what it is that keeps us going after Maree, our front woman of the business, asked me why I don't get very worried about things following a mildly frustrating day we had recently. For me the answer is actually in managing my expectations and those of others around me about what I am doing, being a part of or can contribute to.
What makes you resilient? Here are some suggestions to help you in 2012.
Maree's question really made me ponder as I know I worry on certain things and I actually thought that I may show it more than I obviously do! Congratulations to my mentors of years ago who showed me how to cope with stress. You guys did well!So with this thought on how do we focus away from stress, I asked my Mentoring Group of students and my business partner for their thoughts or views of what they do to remain resilient, in the hope that it may give you some new strategies to use for 2012.
I personally deal with expectation, stress, frustration or angst by action. Every day I wake up and after I growl at the earliness of the hour I then I ask myself this: what thought, action, expression or movement can I do today to add value to where I want to be or go with the day? This allows me to retrain and tune my brain and awareness into action, not stagnation.
Business Partner Nicole: I am trying to train myself to cope with it better by voicing my stresses when they arise rather than holding them in. I am also getting better at stepping back and being able to look at things from a bigger perspective. And of course humour – what’s the point if you can’t have a laugh at yourself?
Wendy: I breathe, use my mantra, meditate, make to-do-lists and get organised, plan ahead, set goals, focus, use discipline, sing loudly in the car, listen to mood music, dance/sing crazily with my daughter, a lot of reading, getting outdoors, exercising, movie watching, having fun, hugging, laughing, playing, long showers, trying something new, pushing my boundaries, injecting passion into my every day, dreaming big, surrounding myself with inspiring people, eating good food and of course..eating chocolate..always focusing on moving forward-one step at a time if necessary and by remembering that everything is ever-changing, the past is the past, there is no time like the present so (to borrow your mantra..lol)- "Just do it".
Jo E: When under pressure it helps to keep your goal(s) up and foremost top of mind - it helps if you just focus on one thing at a time. Revisiting my mantra also helps. Always look at the big picture helps me to not get lost or caught up in the shit that happens along the way...
Simone: The New Year...I'm in denial about Christmas! A multi-national project doesn't stop for the Yuletide season, even if we in Australia do, so I focus on the job at hand & just keep doing what I & others need me to do. My reward - a peaceful Christmas to relax and refresh for 2012.
Jo R: I like to meditate to empty the mind of thought and aid relaxation. I find ways to exercise my intuition & skills. I set tasks for myself that I can work on to achieve an outcome. I surround myself with like-minded people.
Jane: I'm a big fan of lists! I keep to-do lists with dates and milestones - they don't always work and I don't always meet them but the act of making them and revising them keeps my goals in front of mind and makes them more likely to be achieved. Choosing a simple statement that positively reflects my goal and repeating it every time I face a choice really helps. Eg I have the power to choose actions which will contribute to me looking awesome by June! So each time I have to choose to eat cake or not, each morning when I have to choose to sleep in or go to the gym - I am both aware and accountable for the choice I actively make.
So no matter what you do or who you are, we each have our own way of being resilient, coping with stress and living our lives. Choose what works for you to thrive during your next year.
